Smite & Pest 02:13
We had a little fight But we're all made up now We passed 'round the plate So, we're all paid up now We've all been to church And we've spoken to God, see? So, the smite and the pest are all behind me Yeah

The first vision asked me to see The second one wanted me to name everything for some reason The first was full of animals and birds Where the second one was a list of words and numbers Could I subtract one and split the difference? Or was the unlearning the lesson? The first vision was big on contrition The second was keen on compulsion and competition The second one, the bad one, was made of concrete And had people in it being mean And the second took a hold and was a whole lot worse The second vision contradicted the first

In that time, plain things were exalted And the sinners never stopped All their sins were overlooked and waved through They had a field day Feeding on the caught-out meek & mild I felt for them again Being backward at coming forward And staying prone on their knees Asking question after question Of course, they got no answers They need to consult with someone "higher up" High up in the heavens where you'll wait for a while And be asked to come on through The Holy Ghost has all the answers The Holy Ghost has all the answers Are you any better for asking? Are you any better for knowing?

“Sometimes, it seems to us that we have been praying a long time without so much as a thumbs up or a like. But don’t get despondent” he counselled, “It’s just his way. You’ll get used to it. In fact, you patiently waiting like this is greatly pleasing to Him. Them types that never stop complaining, they just become a distant, boring chorus. We can live without them, right? Just you wait…and wait some more…he will show himself in glory even greater than you can conjure in your hollow head…more vivid than all the visions of Julian or them wild women of long anchoress. The crying and sobbing will stop and those up flights and down pains, the rolling, spiking wave that persists through life will all be become flat and green and easy to walk on. And it will feel cold and pretty under your feet, a cushion of clover and buttercup, every pebble a yielding moss, a fine sponge, a sweet, unsticky mallow. I received all sorts of signs in my ears One was a sound like a pair of bellows I was inwardly told not to be afraid For it was the sound of the holy spirit...whatever that is The unvoiced sounds found a reed and became words Treasures of wickedness profit nothing The rich man’s wealth is their strong city The destruction of the poor is their poverty How come most fall among thorns? O, to be in that number Let us pray it will not end well Let us pray it will not end well Let us pray it will not end well Let us pray it will not end well Let us pray it will not end well From a clothes horse, you wore us out Those exhausted sleeves And in our bed clothes when not our best You wore us down That was when I thought better of it And left you alone The way they saw the things they saw Was never very clear to me Through a lens their fathers bought Picture the bedroom scene...it's not a pretty one Seemed like stained glass when open-ended Where everything was somehow one like someone planned it I caught you looking for the perfect place And firmly believing in The power of prayer The power of prayer

I held your face between my hands A midnight occupation that felt like the truth It still does, it still does Applied the charcoal to your last moustache Your eyes, your freckles in the light at 5am And half listening to Bernard Herrmann That felt like the truth It still does, it still does And on a balcony, watching bats Hot September, 10pm Indirect requests on a piece of paper The torture of one week without you That felt like the truth It still does, it still does

Santa Sprees

The Anglo-Japanese band Santa Sprees have been advancing the art of unpopular song since 1994. Making questionable progress from the low-skilled, no-fidelity, no wave of their earliest cassettes to the largely futile primitive avant bubblegum of today, releasing ten collections to date on a trail of defunct labels and media. ... more
